Transportation Demand ManagementStanford's award winning Transportation Demand Management (TDM) program (which includes Recognition by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one of the "Best Workplaces for Commuters") has resulted in a steady decrease in the number of individuals who drive alone to work; down from 72% in 2002 to 55% in 2006. Stanford's program is built around the Marguerite, a shuttle system that provides free transit throughout the campus and parts of the surrounding community and that connects to local transit, Caltrain stations, and shopping and entertainment areas. The TDM program includes incentives and services for employees who agree not to drive alone to work. Benefits include cash payments for not driving (Clean Air Cash), guaranteed rides home in case of illness or other emergencies, rideshare matching services, vanpool subsidies, pretax payroll deduction for transit passes and commuter checks, complimentary daily parking passes for those who carpool, and reserved parking spaces for all carpools and vanpool. The TDM program further supports a transportation alternative to single-occupant vehicles via passes for free use of local transit and Caltrain by university employees.
