Residential & Dining Enterprises

Stanford has been a residential university since its beginnings. Today Stanford houses 97% of all its undergraduates and nearly 60% of its graduate students. Residential & Dining Enterprises uses this close connection with students to promote sustainable behaviors, including sponsoring the Energy Bowl and Water Derby competitions to conserve natural resources. Stanford Dining is the first certified Green Business university food service program in the nation. With over $7.5 million in food purchases annually it plays a significant role in educating and leading sustainability initiatives. 22% of food served (including meat, milk and seasonal produce) is organic and 40% is purchased from local farmers. Students have opportunities to learn from these farmers and participate in maintaining fresh, organic herb gardens on campus. All dining locations are designed for energy efficiency, recycling, and gathering food wastes for composting. For more information go to http://www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/sustain.htm
