BigFix Power Management
Using the BigFix software already found on most Windows computers on campus, Stanford University encourages you
to participate in the Stanford Power Management program. You can reduce your carbon footprint, save energy, and
even be eligible to participate in a PG&E rebate program.
Each computer participating in the program is eligible for a $15 rebate. Rebate money will be distributed
to the schools & departments to use to support other Sustainable IT efforts, including replacing CRT's with
flat-panel monitors or, replacing power-heavy tower computer systems with more energy-efficient ones.
Additionally, for students who opt to participate, all rebate money will be donated to the
Stanford Green Fund.
The Green Fund invests in projects to create a sustainable future.
Go Green!
If you have BigFix installed on your Windows computer you can participate by downloading the
Power Management settings. You may choose from:
- Red - no power management
- Yellow - monitor turns off after 30 minutes of inactivity
- Green - monitor turns off after 15 minutes of inactivity
- Super Green - monitor turns off after 10 minutes of inactivity
and the computer goes to Stand-by after one hour
- Custom - choose your own power management settings.
There are many reasons to participate in this program, including one-time rebates, annual electricity cost savings,
and reduced carbon emissions.
-
One-time Rebates: PG&E will give Stanford $15 per computer that is using Big Fix with Stanford Power Management.
On February 15th, Stanford will take a count of all machines with Stanford Power Management enabled.
-
Annual Cost Savings: estimates indicate that individual departments will save up to $17 per computer
per year, which, based on 24,000 computers on campus with BigFix installed, reflects over $400,000 in annual
savings on the electric bill.
-
Reduced Carbon Emissions: This also represents 28,000 tons of CO2 kept from entering the atmosphere,
or the equivalent of taking 4,600 cars off the road for a year.
For Faculty and Staff Participants
Your department may decide to opt in to use Stanford Power Management as a group. For those groups, your local BigFix
console operator (usually your local network administrator) will update your power management settings.
Contact your BigFix console operator if you have questions or want to adjust your power management settings.
If your department is not participating, you can still opt to participate on your own by downloading the Power
Management settings. Alternately, you may want to convince your console operator to have the department participate.
Every little bit counts!
For Student Participants
To earn $15 for Stanford Green Fund, and to help reduce
carbon emissions, download the Stanford Power Management tool and select your preferred power management settings.
You will need to have BigFix installed.
Turning Off Your Power Management Settings
If you need to, you can change your power management settings for the day, but it will revert to your Stanford Power
Management settings overnight. To adjust your settings for the day, right-click on your desktop. Go to the Screen Saver tab
and click the Power button to select an alternate power scheme for the day.
If you want to end your participation in the program, just revisit the Stanford Power Management tool and select
None from the list of options. This will opt you out of the program.
Don't have BigFix?
You can download BigFix from the Essential Stanford Software site.
Macintosh users: BigFix for Macs is coming soon! We're even planning to make a second rebate request to include the Mac
users later in the year. Check back for more information.
If you don't want to install BigFix but you still want to help save electricity and reduce your carbon footprint, you can
manually adjust your power settings by right-clicking on your desktop. Go to the Screen Saver tab and click the Power button
to set up a power scheme that turns off your monitor after a short period of inactivity.
